On the morning of August 26, 2026, a catastrophic series of flash floods tore through a stretch of the Trishuli River in Nepal, sweeping away homes, roads, bridges, and entire settlements across the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. What Happened

The floods struck along a roughly 72-kilometre stretch of the Trishuli River, affecting dozens of communities in Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. The disaster also reached the Gyirong Port crossing on the China-Nepal border, a key trade and tourism gateway between the two countries.

Water levels along the Trishuli reportedly surged by as much as nine metres in just half an hour, giving residents little to no time to reach safety. Villages including Timure and Syapru Besi in Rasuwa district were among the hardest hit, with floodwaters later reaching Nuwakot, Dhading, and other downstream districts.

Nepali authorities have confirmed hundreds of deaths, with several hundred more people still reported missing, including a significant number of foreign nationals from multiple countries. Casualty figures continue to rise as search and rescue operations progress, and officials have warned that the toll may climb further.

What Caused the Flood

Scientists point to an enormous landslide and a partial glacier collapse high in the Himalayas as the likely trigger. The event generated a tremor measuring 5.2 in magnitude, strong enough to be picked up by seismic monitoring stations as far away as the United States and Germany. The resulting mass of rock, ice, and debris is believed to have melted glacial ice on its way down, unleashing an extraordinary volume of water into the valley below with little warning.

A flash flood early warning system jointly maintained by Nepali and Chinese authorities had prevented casualties in past events, but it was not designed to detect this kind of sudden glacial and landslide-driven surge, leaving downstream communities with almost no time to evacuate.

The Road to Recovery

Emergency response teams, including local authorities and international humanitarian organisations, are working to deliver medical care, clean water, shelter, and essential supplies to affected communities. Efforts are also underway to reunite families separated by the disaster and to support the mental health and wellbeing of survivors, particularly children.
